As the news editor for The Temple News, Temple's student run newspaper, covering this election was one wild ride. Ou coverage began with the democratic candidate debate at Drexel University last fall and was sporadic up until the crunch of April's Pennsylvania Primary, when we kicked things into high gear.
Admittedly much of our coverage focused on the democratic candidates because those were the people coming to Philadelphia and Temple. I can't count how many times I've seen the Clintons over the past year, it's been too many. On the otherhand, republican candidates in the city, much less Temple's campus have been few and far between. We tried to balance our coverage with pieces on the lacking Republican prescence in the city, what the Temple College Republicans have been up to, and numerous calls to the local McCain office.
To be honest, the McCain campaign would often not return phone calls or e-mails at all when I requested to be put on their press release list. On the other hand the Obama campaign bent over backwards to get in touch with college newspapers. The college media press person for Obama's campaign in Philadelphia called me numerous times a day and sent me hundreds of e-mails over the past few months. It was borderline annoying but they got their shit done.
I'm sure the experience for more propminent newspapers was different but i think this was similar to what happened to other college newspapers.
